Subject: LL-L: "Little Words"

I had always thought that the US 'through' was an ellipsis for 'through
to'.  But I can find no evidence for this.  Is it an extension of the
world-wide English usage of 'through', when describing a continuum?
"ultra-violet through infra-red"?
