From: Roger P. G. Thijs <roger.thijs at village.uunet.be>
Subject: Language policies

Today I have been at the "final" of the annual competition of "literature in
Limburgish" in Weert (Netherlands Limburg). The very same day the 11th
anthology of litterature in Limburgish was presented to the press, and the
final papers of the competition are all five included in the volume. Clearly
the anthology was finished in an hurry, for having it ready for this very
day, so the ISBN number is incomplete, and it has some typographical
oddities:
Veldeke Literair Reeks, deil 11, "'t leich dreet zach de nach in",
Bloomlaezing oot 't Limburgs, Venlo, oktober 1999, ISBN nr. 90.6216.......,
112 pp.

The contributions that got nominated, in the final order:
1. W. Heymans (Kirchrao), Sjtille Sjtee (pp. 94-98)
2. M. Ehlen (Mheer), Euridyce (pp. 99-101)
3. J. Caris (Mestreech), Gewoen (pp. 69-72)
4. S. Vandewinkel (Bree), De zót (pp. 102-106)
5. L. Scholtes (Kirchrao), In 't duuster waad 't lit. (pp. 8-16)

The only Belgian in the list ended fourth. One must add that Sigi
Vandewinkel had to compete with retired teachers, while Sigi himself is a
boy of less than 20 years old. He also got a second contribution published
in the very same anthology: "De Keus" (pp. 17-20). I think this proves the
policy of promoting Limburgish in the schools of Belgian Limburg, since
about two years, stimulates the use of the old language by the kids.

In his speach, the "gedeputeerde" of the provincial government of Belgian
Limburg explained how far one is with the recognition of Limburgish as a
regional language in Belgium. (recognition in the Netherlands is already a
fact).
For a meeting about recognition in Innsbruck, some time ago, the provincial
government had sent 2 representatives for defending its case. The Flemish
regional government had sent 2 "spies" for the very same meeting.
Afterwards the files passed from Foreign Affairs to the Belgian prime
minister. The prime minister has sent the files to ..... the "Taalunie" in
Den Haag for advice. Actually the "Flemish chamber" of the Taalunie does
what it can for burying the file, Sleypen says. Well it will become a dirty
battle, I guess.

Regards,
Roger
