Liewe Laaglanders,
The name Magnus is apparently just the Latin adjective "magnus" -
"great," which was picked up in Scandinavia as a personal name. Perhaps they
had heard a lot about Karolus Magnus (Charlemagne). And then the Vikings
brought the name to the British Isles etc.
Speaking of names: reconstructing the genealogy of my mother's kin in
Middle Kentucky, I've run across the name "Eard," "Aird" (different
spellings). Does anyone know where this came from? I'm guessing some form
of Gaelic, but I don't know for sure.

Cheers,
Joe Stromberg
