From: Bob Stockman [bsman at iserv.net]
Subject: Low German Konferenz

Dear Ron and friends.

Perhaps you'd be interested in a short report on the 3rd biannual Low German
conference just completed in Wausau, WI. The attendance included 150 from
U.S. and 35 (mostly Schleswig Holsteiners) from Germany. Low German
speakers came from OH, Wi, MN, TX, KS, MO, IL, and included the dialects of
Westphalian, Hannoverian, Oldenburg, Emsland, Schleswig, Holstein, Pommern,
Mecklenburg, one Nord Frisian but very unfortunately no Ost Frisians.

One local Pommern speaker brought his two young grandchildren. He had been
tutuoring them with flash cards, and they demonstrated what they'd learned.
They pronounced the words very well and, as you can imagine, they stole the
show.

Several speakers talked about the origin and diversity of the various
dialects. A great time was had at a dance on Friday evening and Sunday
morning included a church service in Pommern platt. The next conference is
23 months, 4 days and 7 minutes away.

Tschüss

Bob Stockman
