Subject: Specialized terms

It occurs to me that in Jane Austen's time (which suddenly seems a very long
time ago, now that we're entering a new millennium) and even later "friends"
meant people who could be relied on especially for financial support, so
most probably members of the extended family or people with influence rather
than people for whom one has feelings of "friendship".
