"Die erste Erw{a"}hnung der Friesen findet sich bei Plinius (Nat. Hist.
IV, 101), der sie als eins der zwischen den Rheinm{u"}ndungen siedelnden
V{o"}lker auff{u"}hrt. Diese Angabe wird von Tacitus best{a"}tigt (Germ.
XXXIV, 2). Als die Ostgrenze des friesischen Gebiets nennt Ptolem{a"}us
die Ems (Geographica II, 11,7). Die modern Arch{a"}ologie glaubt, die
_Frisii_, _Frisiaevones_ der antiken Autoren in Verbindung bringen zu
k{o"}nnen mit den Funden der sog. Streifbandkeramik in den n{o"}rdlichen
Niederlanden (bes. im heutigen Westergo in der Provinz Friesland) aus
der Zeit von etwa 200 v.Chr. bis zu Beginn unserer Zeitrechnung. Da
dieser Raum aber nicht zum {a"}ltesten Wohngebiet der Germanen
geh{o"}rt, wird es sich hier um ein nicht-germanisches Volk handeln, das
-- wahrscheinlich im Laufe eines langen Prozesses -- von den aus dem
Osten eindr{a"}ngenden Germanen assimiliert worden ist. Hierauf deuten
sowohl gewisse vorgermanische Elemente in den Ortsnamen des betreffenden
K{u"}stengebietes als auch die relative Kontinuit{a"}t der
arch{a"}ologischen Funde. Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang die von
H. Kuhn ge{a"}u{ss}erte Vermutung, da{ss} der Name der Friesen
nicht-germanischen Ursprungs sei."

Hopefully this lends some credence to what I had said.
