Dear Lowlanders,

This year we received 58 submissions to the Freudenthal Prize competition for
Low Saxon (Low German) literature. As a winner in 1999 I had the privilege of
serving on the jury. It was a lot of work, not only the reading part but also
because there were so many good works so that choosing a winner was anything
but easy. By the way, I was delighted to find one work in Mennonite Low Saxon
(Plautdietsch) and one submission from the Netherlands in the batch. Below
you will find an excerpt from the announcement by Pastor Dr. Heinrich Kröger,
the chairman of the Freudenthal Society, followed by the announcement of the
2001 competition. I hope there will be more works from other parts of the
world among the submissions.

With friendly regards,
Reinhard "Ron" Hahn
