Subject: "Online resources"

The main reason I'm not contributing at the moment is that
I'm trying to get some of the more worthwhile of the texts
in my collection up on ScotsteXt by Christmas.

There is now a collection of Scots nursery rhymes on ScotsteXt.
Unfortunately the current automated ScotsteXt layout is a bit
dull for this to be set up as a children's presentation, so for
the moment it should be seen as a resource for parents and
teachers. In 2001 ("the REAL millenium"!) I'm aiming to
reprogram the site for faster and more flexible presentation,
and also to incorporate music for the songs on the whole site.

Meanwhile, the Nursery Rhyme collection contains poems, songs,
counting games, riddles and wordplay on all those themes so
loved by children, such as...

...unrequited love...

O Johnnie, O Johnnie, whit can the maitter be,
That A loe this leddy, an she loesna me?
An for her sake A maun dee, maun dee,
An for her sake A maun dee!

...social commentary...

Bonny Meggy, braw Meggy,
Bonny Meggy Bridie, O!
When she got on her damask goon,
She leukit like a leddy, O!
But when she teuk it aff again,
She wis but Meggy Bridie, O!

...religous symbology...

A'll gie ye a pair o bonny shuin,
The tane made in Sodom, the tither in Rome,
If ye'll walk wi me, leddy, leddy,
If ye'll walk wi me, leddy.

...avarice...

If ye'll gie me the hale o Bristol toon,
Wi coaches rowin up an doon,
A will walk wi ye, wi ye,
An A will walk wi ye.

...cruelty...

A haed a little pownie,
They ca'd it Dapple Grey;
A lent it tae a leddy,
Tae ride a mile away.

She whupped it, she lashed it,
She ca'd it ower the braes;
A winna lend ma pownie mair,
Gin a' the leddies prays.

...infidelity...

"An whaur's the ring that A gied ye,
That A gied ye, that A gied ye,
An whaur's the ring that A gied ye,
Ye little cutty-quean, O?"

"A gied it till an ox-ee,
An ox-ee, an ox-ee;
A gied it till an ox-ee,
A true sweethert o mine!"

...mass murder...

Qo Tweed tae Till,
"Whit gars ye gang sae still?"
Qo Till tae Tweed,
"Though you rin wi speed,
An A rin slaw,
For ilka ane that you droon,
A droon twa."

...and pure evil...

Hauf a puddock, half a toad,
Hauf a yalla yorlin,
Drinks a drap o the deil's bluid,
Every Mey mornin.

However, there is also material suitable for adults, including songs that
every Scot will instantly recognise...

Wha saw the Forty-Saicont,
Wha saw them gang awa?
Wha saw the Forty-Saicont,
Mairchin doon the Broomielaw?
Some o them haed tartan troosers,
Some o them haed nane ava;
Some o them haed jeely pieces,
Mairchin doon the Broomielaw.

...riddles (answer below)...

Banks fou, braes fou,
Gether ye a' the day, ye'll no gether yer nieves fou.

...charms...

Rain, rain, rattle stanes,
Dinna rain on me;
But rain on John o Groat's hoose,
Faur ayont the sea.

...lullabies...

Hush an baloo, babby,
Hush an baloo;
A' the lave's in their beds;
A'm hushin you.

...and wordplay...

On Tintock tap there is a mist,
An in that mist there is a kist,
An in that kist there is a caup,
An in the caup there is a drap.
Tak up the caup an drink the drap,
An set the caup on Tintock tap!

http://scotstext.org -> poems -> nursery rhymes.

(the answer to the above riddle is "mist").
