Flower.

For anyone who doesn't know this song but is interested in learning it,
here's the music in the well-known "abc" format (see

While we're on the subject of Appalachian songs, I wonder if anyone could
tell me if "Frog Went a-Courtin'" is Appalachian? I ask because I've always
thought it sounded like it, and since I'll be putting the Scots version on
my website it would be interesting to be able to explain the Appalachian
connection if there is one. The first verse as I know it is:

Frog went a-courtin and he did ride,
Mhmmm!
Frog went a-courtin and he did ride,
Mhmmm!
Frog went a-courtin and he did ride,
Sword and pistol by his side,
Mhmmm!
Mhmmm!
Mhmmm!

I don't remember the rest!

The Scottish version is called "Cuddy Alane", and has the wonderful heady
mix of violence and mayhem so typical of traditional nursery songs. I sing
it to the same tune as Frog Went a-Courtin, but obviously a little
imagination is needed to expand the "Mhmmm!s" into the full Scots nonsense
phrases. Watch out for the extra line in the last verse, too! Has anybody
heard or can supply a different tune? Anyway, I hope you enjoy singing this
as much as I do! Here it is:
