Subject: Events

Dear Lowlanders,

Even though this is only indirectly Lowlands-related, I wish to pass on to you
who have access to the History Channel on TV (US) the announcement that
tonight a special documentary will aired tonight about the Rom ("Gyspsies")
entitled "A Curse on the Gypsies" at US times ...

Eastern and Western 8pm
Central 6pm
Mountain 7pm

Rumor has it that it's really quite good, though I have to add that I heard
about it from Yale Strom (the author of the book _Uncertain Roads: Searching
for the Gypsies_) who was involved in the making of the documentary film and
is interviewed on camera.

I know very little about the documentary's contents at this stage and am
hoping that there are references to Rom presence in Lowlandic-speaking areas.

By the way, Hamborg/Hamburg in Northern Germany where both Romani (Romanès)
and Sinti speakers live, is the home of the Roma National Congress
(http://www.romnews.com) which mainly deals with European issues but is also
involved in global ones.

And also by the way, I've "discovered" in the Sinti varieties (basically an
Indo-Aryan language used mostly in Germany, Austria and Italy) among
supposedly German loanwords some that look "suspiciously" like Low Saxon (Low
German) ones.

If you wish to prepare yourselves before watching the program, or even without
watching the program, I wholeheartedly recommend the very informative web site
"The Patrin" (http://www10.geocities.com/Paris/5121/patrin.htm). (Apparently,
a _patrin_ is a "graffiti" symbol in a Rom-internal system of directional
signs.)

Best regards,

Reinhard/Ron
