I think the inclusion of  nds (Low Saxon) in the iso639-2 code is a success
which is worth to celebrate.
And my congratulations to all LL-interested  but first of all to Ron, who, I
am sure, at least indirectly has contributed substantially to the readiness to
recognize "nds".
Next to the pleasant fact I think the details are gratifying:
-The full name uses  "Low Saxon" (bas saxon) with the same status as the
unavoidable "Low German" (bas allemand).
-The language correctly is not listed  under German, Low (like it correctly
is done for German, old high).
- Whatever the really reason is to choose nds, the explanation NeDerSassisch
is a obvious  logical possibility to ''explain'' the code.

ISO 639 clearly deals with languages and not with vernaculars which clearly
are regarded as dialects. So the inclusion in the list shows a very official
recognition as dialect, which is the essential point.
But the above mentioned details strengthen this perception, in my opinion.

The not-inclusion of Low Saxon in the EBLUL mentioned by Roger and Ron is not
new to old LL-L participants. However, I thought the ISO639-2 code might not
only be a consiliation for the EBLUL deficiency, but also be an additional
argument to change the attitude of EBLUL.
Accordingly I wrote a letter to the German committee, based on  Ro&Ro's
postings.(copy attached) I don't expect that it will help, maar nooit
geschoten is altijd mis.

Sehr geehrter Herr Schramm,
wenn ich richtig informiert bin, sind Sie der deutsche Vertreter von EBLUL
und in dieser Funktion dafür zuständig, welche Minderheitssprachen von EBLUL
in Deutschland anerkannt werden.
So weit ich weiß, erwähnt  EBLUL in seinen Publikationen für Deutschland die
Minderheitssprachen Dänisch, zwei friesische Varianten, Roma und Sorbisch,
nicht aber Niedersächsisch (Niederdeutsch).

Das ist unverständlich und schade und untergräbt m.E. letztlich auch die
Autorität von EBLUL.

Mir ist der Grund nicht bekannt.
Sollte das linguistisch nicht haltbare Vorurteil, Niedersächsisch sei ein
Dialekt des Deutschen eine Rolle spielen (wenn dem so ist, warum hat EBLUL
dann schon Schottisch und Occitanisch berücksischtigt, die in sehr
vergleichbarer Position zu Englisch bzw. Französisch sind wie Niedersächsisch
zu Deutsch?) dann ist vielleicht der Hinweis zweckdienlich, dass die von EBLUL
so hartnäckig ignorierte Minderheitssprache sehr wohl einen offiziellen
Sprachenstatus im ISO639-2 hat: der code ´´nds´´ (NeDerSassisch) steht da für
die Sprache Low Saxon - Low German.

Es sollte uns alle freuen wenn zB in einer Neuauflage des ´´Mini guide to
lesser used languages of the European Union´´ Deutschlands größte
Minderheitssprache aufscheinen würde.
