In the review "Ons erfdeel" Vol. 40 (2000) issue nr. 3, p. 457-459,
(info at onserfdeel.be) there is an interesting article on the remnants
of the Dutch language in the state of New York. In fact, it is a
summary of some parts of a book by Lucas Ligtenberg, De nieuwe wereld
van Peter Stuyvesant : nederlandse voetsporen in de verenigde Staten,
ed. balans Amsterdam 1999 (311 p).

  It survived until about 1920. The author writes it would be
wonderful if at least one speaker would have survived somewhere in
the Catskill Mountains or so ...
