Liewe Laaglanders,
As for Beowulf, I saw a printed sample of Heaney's work and wasn't at all
impressed - until I heard him _read_ it on a news program. Then I could tell
it was very much in the spirit of the original. Old English poetry has to be
read aloud; you can't just let it lie there on the page. Heaney's own
English - from N. Ireland, if I remember this rightly - owes much to Scots,
and Scots it seems to me is much closer in syntax to Old English and descends
directly from the Northumbrian form of that language. The nearest
continental relation of Old English was Old Frisian (but we only have texts
from later stages of Frisian), followed closely by Old Saxon, whose chief
literary monument is the Heliand. I'm sure others on this list know a great
deal about these matters.

Hwaet!
Joe Stromberg
