We were told at school that this was from "garde à l'eau", which might
explain better the frequency of the usage - every time someone used the
"chanty", to be precise!

It's the other way round, actually - normal folks call them "sybies"
(['s at ibIz], singular "sybie" ['s at ibI]), everybody else calls them spring
onions  ;)
