But the name was first attached to the great auk of Newfoundland (flightless
seabird of the Northern Hemisphere) and only later transferred to penguins
(flightless seabirds of the Southern Hemisphere).

Yes, I've heard that particular specie is referred to here in Afrikaans
as the "Goeie Christen" pear. There are obviously more than only
that specie grown here.
