Well indeed, this is just one of the many questions we will have to
answer in the study. My own suspicion is that, in practice, the
differences between Mainland Scots and Ulster Scots are overplayed.
Really this is a chance to agree, at least to an extent, a standard of
sorts.

A colleague will be heading over to Scotland from 2-9 November to
consult about some of these issues. I would add, however, that this
project will be funded by Ireland (both North and South), so naturally
Ulster dialects will take preference on voice overs etc.

Despite this, this is a chance to really develop Scots on a much
grander scale than could have previously been imagined. Certainly this
could prove to be a key literary resource, a real meeting of Burnsian
poetry with Doric ballads, of the indytes of Ulster's Rhyming Weavers
and Modern Shetlandic. Unity is what this is about.

On that issue, we are also considering sending a delegation to
northern Germany. I feel this will probably be more beneficial during
the *implementation* of this project rather than the planning of it.
However, I think all groups represented here should have a voice in
this. Either we can learn from your past experience of doing this or,
more likely, we can set an example for you to aim at.
