koterij: bouwvallig huis, krot
duivenkot, hondekot, kiekenkot, konijnekot, studentenkot, vogelenkot,
kotbaas, kotbazin, kotmadam, kotservice, kotstudent

raar vond.
Bij ons in Limburg was het:
- ofwel: voornaam (tout court)
- of: meneer + familienaam
maar nooit: meneer + voornaam.
In Leuven was dat laatste wel gebruikelijk.

Aan mijn vorig berichtje
 >>>> We actually use in Antwerp:
- "caracol" for the white snails, served in a cup in 'their soup", along
the streets
- "escargot" for the black snails, served with garlic butter in
restaurants. <<<<
- levend dier: Nederlands woord
- klaar om te eten: Frans woord.

Subject: Etymology

Roger,

The use of _caracol_ in Belgium, specifically in Antwerp, does not seem all
that surprising to me, given the Spanish connection. _Caracol_ is the Spanish
word for 'snail'. It also does not seem all that surprising to me that it
denotes a specific kind of snail prepared as food, differentiated from
French-derived _escargot_ for the large edible vineyard snails. Loanwords
whose native meaning is the same (in this case French and Spanish ones) tend
to be used to refer to different varieties in the recipient language.

Gröten,
Reinhard/Ron
