Ay - gin it wis up ti me, I wad hae <mack> an <tack>, an likely <sick> an
<sicken> asweel (cause in Scots Eng. _sick_ is _seek/seik_ oniewey). I
suggestit <mack> an <tack> at the Spellin collogues, but it didna gang doun
weel. Houaniver, it's ae thing ti say at ye can thole twa-three kenspeckle
exceptions like <mak> an <tak> - whit I'm girnin aboot is at David Purves
than uises thae twa-three exceptions ti threip for uisin dooble KK an final
single K aawey (except identical English cognates, i coorse). Gin ye'r gaun
ti regularise, ye shoud regularise the few ti fit the monie, no the ither
wey roond; an gin ye dinna, it's better ti hae twa-three exceptions nor ti
split the KKs an CKs alang the fause English/Scots divide (kynd o a
orthographic Tweed!) an mak the hail leid leuk like exceptions ti ither
(aiblins 'schizographemic' wad be better nor 'schizographic', eh, Ron?)

In Shetlandic, the 'siccan' problem is solved bi the fact at the word haes
a different vowel phoneme - tho it soonds muckle the same as [I], afore a
unvyced consonant this is actually /e/, rhymin wi e.g. 'paet' (peat),
'maet' etc. raither nor wi e.g. 'pick', 'lick', etc - sae I write 'saek' an
'saeken'.

>A'll tak a keek see gin a can finnd that. It wad certies expoun a thing or

>twa.

It's the airticle i the Edinburgh History of the Scots Language, somewey or
ither, I think.

John.
