Andy wrate:

>In Scots the spellings <ai> an <ay> for /e/ originially represented a
>dipthong that became monophthongized, resulting in a long vowel. The
>spelling was retained.
>As a result the <i> or <y> came to be seen as orthographic markers of
>length. This was extended to the vowels <e>, <o> and <u>.
>Two ways arose for representing long vowels <ai>, <ei>, <oi>, <ui> (also
>with <y>) and <aConsonant e> etc.
><iCe> an <yCe> now represent a diphthong. Old Sc. /i:/ - Mid. Sc. /ei/ -
>Mod. Sc. /ae + @i/ etc.
>
>Old Sc. - Middle Scots - Mod. Sc. - Eng.
>
>mare /ai/ - mair /e:/ - mair /e:/ - more
>dede /e:/ - deid /i:/ - deid /i/ - dead
>remede " - remeid " - remeid " - remedy
>before /o:/ - befoir /o:/ - afore /o:/ - before
>gude /o-slash/ - guid /o-slash/ - guid * - good
>mune " - muin  " - muin * - moon
>
>Note: mair an afore subject to SVLR /e/ and /o/ also occur in this
position.
>* The multitude o dialect spellings as previously explained by various
>contributors.

I'll juist add here at, whan Andy says at the final <e> an follaein <i>
spellins wis uised ti shaw _lang_ vowels, this disna mean at thae vowels is
lang in _modren_ Scots. Since than, the lenth difference o aulder Scots
vowels haes been replaced bi differs o vowel quality; phonological vowel
lenth haes been tint aathegither in (maist kynds o) modren Scots, vowel
lenth bein determined bi the SVLR, as exponed bi Sandy no lang syne.

e.g.

Early Scots /u:/ - crouse, hoose, dou (my spellins) -> middle Scots /u:/ ->
modren Scots /u/ [krus], [hus], but lang in _dou_ [du:], afore morpheme
mairch; _jalouse_ [dZ@'lu:z], afore vyced fricative, etc.

Early Scots /2:/ - muin, uiss(n), uise(v), dae (my spellins) -> middle
Scots /2:/ -> modren
Shetlandic /2/ - [m2n], [2s] (n), but [2:z] (v), [d2:];
NE [min], [is], [i:z], [di:];
Central [mIn], [jIs], [je:z], [de:].
