When we discussed this topic I wrote:

Sadly, nobody replied, but this turns out to be a serious matter. My
Classical Greek textbook says: "Dogs say 'au [alpha upsilon] au' and sheep
say 'beh [beta eta] beh'. This is part of the evidence for the
pronunciation
of vowel sounds in the 5th century BC."
