Dear Lowlanders,

I have received the following communication (privately and in our LL-L
visitors' book) and am wondering if we will have to include Zeelandic (Zeeuws)
as a Lowlands language with its own code and its own LL-L intro page.  What do
you think?

In English: great site, nice to see all the linguisitic similarity and above
all the small differences. Some information on Zeeuws (the regional language
of the Dutch province of Zeeland) would really make this site complete. For
now, turn to www.zeeuws.cjb.net for that info.

Hi,

Everything about Zeêuws, the regional language of the Dutch province of
Zeeland: www.zeeuws.cjb.net
Zeeuws is of mixed franconian and frisian origin and has been 'filed' under
Northsea-germanic languages by quite a few linguists (together with Frisian,
Scots and English). Others are convinced it's a western germanic language.
It's in the process of being recognised as a regional language by the Dutch
government according to the European Charter for Regional and Minority
Languages.

I came across the word "pantsing" in book on political correctness. It
apparently means exposing the underpants of a fellow pupil by lifting a
girl's skirt or pulling down a boy's pants and is an expellable offence
(where? when?) in grade school.

In BE, as far as I know, the word "underpants" is confined to the garment
worn by males. Women used to wear "knickers" but now perhaps more commonly
wear "panties" or "pants", or something more exotic. For men, "underpants"
has largely been replaced by generic "pants", with "briefs", "shorts", etc,
for specific types.

I assume that the long form (word, not garment) "underpants" used for
women's attire in N America is retained because of the existence of a
different garment called "overpants", something I think unknown in Britain,
worn outdoors in winter. Is this garment still in use or has the advent of
tights and pantihose [thus in Chambers Dictionary: my Outlook Express
spellchecker prefers "pantyhose" and was so upset by the other spelling that
it crashed!] - both called "tights" in BE - made it obsolete?
