In Old English texts, the grapheme <s> represents both
/z/ and /s/.
1. as /z/: between two voiced sounds (vowels or
consonants as /l/, /m/, /r/, /n/.
ex. _risan_
2. as /s/: in initial and final position, and when
doubled

note: :
1. almost always to be pronounced as Modern English
'sh'
ex. OE _scip_ is pronounced the same way as MnE _ship_
2. occasionally as /sk/, as in _ascian_ (ask) and
_Scottas_ (Irishmen, Scots).

Best regards,

Frank Verhoft
