Subject: Interspecies Lowlandic

Over Christmas I watched a lot of those costume dramas with high production

values which the BBC and other British TV channels do so well. I noticed
that when carters and carriage drivers want to get their vehicle moving
they
say "Walk on" to the horse(s). I'm sure this is not historically accurate.
The word of command used to be "gee up" or "giddyup", or the order was
given
by clicking the tongue or slapping the reins. There were probably many
regional differences. "Walk on" is, I believe, the form of command now used

by the horsey set, and it seems logical that it is what the present
generation of horses understands, but given the artifice involved in these
productions it doesn't seem to require much of an effort to rerecord or
just
delete the anachronism.

The command to stop is, I think, still "whoa", pronounced [wo] or [hwo].
