1. In "Nederlands Limburg" there is an on-going row about the Belbus
service.

A "Belbus" is (at least as we know it in Belgium) a bus ervice on
demand, offering flexibility but avoiding the bus touring empty. In the
South-East of the Netherlands the call-center for servicing Limburg  is
in Tilburg (North Brabant), and this gives serious problems of people
not understanding each other's language.

Maar met deze taalproblemen hang je voor zulk simpel telefoontje al vlug
acht tot vijftien minuten aan de lijn....

2. "Nederbelgen" is the Belgian word for people relocating from the
Netherlands to the North of Belgium. New legislation in the Netherlands
allows full deduction of mortgages, even when the house is outside the
Netherlands. The massive emigration to the North of Belgium makes prices
of real estate rise significantly.

Especially Belgian municipalities feel handicaped.
Income of Belgian municipalities is basically coming from:
- real estate tax, called "onroerende voorheffing" in Belgium. The term
"voorheffing" is used since a correction can be obtained in the process
of calculation the tax on total personal income.
- "opcentiemen" as a surcharge on the income tax: E.g. when one pays 50%
national tax on one's income, and the "opcentiemen" of one's
municipality are 10% the tax one pays is 55% of one's income (I'm
simplifying)
As to the Belgian-Dutch treaty for avoiding double taxation, national
tax should be imposed in the country where one works, so Belgian
municipalities do not have any basis for "opcentiemen"-surcharging on
the income of people living in Belgium but professionally active in the
Netherlands.

3. I reported about the merger of the two Limburgish universities some
days ago.

On Friday Jan 19 the (international) treaty for this merger was signed
in Maastricht by the Dutch minister of Education Loek Hermans and the
Flemish Minister of Education Marleen Vanderpoorten.

In Belgium Education is a regional matter. The regions may sign
international treaties for matters belonging to their competence.
BTW "Federalisation" in Belgium means exactly the inverse of what it
means in other countries:
US: transfer competence from the States to the Union/Federation.
Belgium: break up the union into a federation of regions with extensive
competences. -- end of comment

Transfer of programs from the 2 national to the international
universities will be done stepwise, quote:

"Voor volgend academiejaar brengen het LUC en de UM twee opleidingen
onder in de transnationale structuur: kennistechnologie-infrastructuur
en biomedische wetenschappen. In 2002-2003 volgen dan een bachelor
opleiding in molecular life sciences, informatie- en
communicatietechnologie en de opleiding onderwijswetenschappen."

In the mean time it's clear why the original name TUL (transnationale
universiteit Limburg) was changed after a couple of days into "UL -
Hasselt-Maastricht", quote:

... UM-woordvoerder Marcel Schrijnmaekers. En hij citeert uit de dikke
van Dale "Een __tul__ is onder meer een tuit van een kan en een
zuigspeen. __Tullen__ betekent ook nog zuipen." ..."... ook nog een
andere betekenis: Een __tulle__ jongen is een homoseksuele jongen die
zich prostitueert. Het LUC heeft ons daarop gewezen en daarom is de
afkorting vermoedelijk gewijzigd."

4. The Jewish communicity in the Netherlands has set-up a "stichting"
for getting a uniform orthography for Jiddish and Hebrew words in Dutch
and calls for paticipation from within Belgium.

Wat is de naam van het inwijdingsfeest in december: _Hanuka_ of
_Chanuka_ of _Chanoekka_?
Op welke lettergrepen van die naam leggen we trouwens de nadruk?
Wat is verder het meervoud van kibboets (of kiboets?): kibboetsen of
kibboetsiem.

In 1997 is de "Stichting Hebreeuwse en Jiddische woorden in het
Nederlands" opgericht om woorden in onze taal die aan het Hebreeuws of
Jiddisch zijn en worden ontleend, toegankelijk(er) te maken.

... samenstelling van een spellinglijst...
... ook verbuigingsvormen (zoals het meervoud van zelfstandige
naamwoorden en de verleden tijd bij werkwoorden)...
... waar de klemtoon ligt en uit welke taal het woord komt: het
Hebreeuws of het Jiddisch...

... betekenisomschrijvingen en andere informatie gaan bekijken, die
moderne ... woordenboeken van het Nederlands geven...
zo staat in een van de meest gebruikte woordenboeken een woord
_mesjomme_. Dat zou of de ziel van het jodendom betekenen, of geld.
Kenners weten dat hier twee woorden met twee betekenissen door elkaar
zijn gehaald.

... bima of biema
... chazan of gazan
... Iwriet of Ivriet
... kabbala of qabbala
... midrash of midraj
... Purim of Poerim
... schlemiel of sjlemiel
... seder of seider
... Tora of Thora of Torah?

Waardoor komt het dat zoveel woorden ... verschillend worden geschreven?
- Ten eerste zijn Hebreeuws en Jiddisch talen met een ander schrift, dat
niet zonder meer in ons westers schrift kan worden overgenomen...
- Ten tweede kent het Hebreeuws, net als andere talen,
(uitspraak)variatie: De belangrijkste varianten zijn de asjkenazische,
met belangrijke relaties met het Jiddisch, en de sefardische....
