In the North Saxon dialects of "oostersch" (i.e., "German") Low Saxon ("Low
German"), 'shadow' is _Schadden_ ['Sad=n].  In the East Frisian varieties
(which are a subgroup of North Saxon and have Frisian substrates as well as
"Dutch" influences), 'shadow' is _Schaar_ [SQ:3] ~ [skQ:3] or _Sgarr_ [sgQ:] ~
[skQ:].  (Cf. Henry's _scha_ "ska" above, and also bear in mind that many Low
Saxon dialects tend to change intervocalic or even final /d/ to /r/.)

In the North Saxon dialects of Germany, 'damage', 'harm', 'loss', 'pity',
which Julian, Jaap and Roger had mentioned earlier (Dutch _schade_ related to
English _scathe_ < Old English _skaða_) is _Schaad_ [SQ:t] or _Schaad'_
[SQ:%d] ~ [SQ:%] (masculine), in some dialects _Schaden_ ['SQ:d=n].  The verb
'to damage', 'to harm', 'to scathe' is _schaden_ ['SQ:d=n] (regular, e.g., _ik
schaad'_ [SQ:%(d)] 'I harm', _dat schaadt_ [SQ:t] 'that/it harms').  The
adjective 'regrettable' (cf. German _schade_) is _schaad'_ [SQ:%d] ~ [SQ:%],
in some dialects still _schade_ ['SQ:de]; e.g., _Dat is (ja man) schaad'!_
'That's a pity!', 'That's a shame!', 'That's too bad!'
