My father is old enough to have done National Service (compulsory
service in the British armed forces, long abolished) and I remember
him telling me that, in his army regiment, men named "Wilson" were
known as "Tug".

The personal connection there is obvious. However, I've also heard
him referring to a certain man as "Curly MacKay", and although I've
never thought much about why, it can't be because of the texture
of his hair. I don't think it's sarcasm either. Maybe I'll ask him
sometime if this is something similar to "Tug Wilson".
