or from Latin _cepula_ < dim. of _cepa_ ?  (the same ultimate
source for Zwiebel)

or perhaps from French _tête_ ('head') < Lat. _testa_ ('shell', 'jug')?

The likelihood of its being borrowed from French would be tied
to its earliest occurrence in the language(s).
