Subject: Virus warning

Dear Lowlanders,

I do not usually post virus warnings, but today I would like to share with you
excerpts from an announcement from one of our local computer networking guys
about a particularly nasty virus. At the very least it ought to remind us all
that it is highly unwise to send or open email attachments without prior
agreement (even to/from people we know) and without running even expected
attachments through up-to-date virus filters.

You will find the excerpts below.

Best regards,
Reinhard/Ron

***

This virus is difficult to detect because it generates different subject lines
and message bodies every time it is sent out. If you receive any weird or
suspicious looking e-mail that has an attachment, please contact the sender
before opening it to make sure that they intended to send it to you.

The virus's name (according to McAfee.com) is W32/Magistr at MM (For more
information: http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99040&)

Although it is not on campus yet (that we know of), this virus is particularly
nasty and can disable your computer permanently. (We won't be able to fix it
without purchase of new hardware and we probably won't be able to recover data
from your hard drive.)

Please make sure that your virus scanners are up to date, and do NOT open any
unexpected attachments that you receive via e-mail, not even from people you
know or who are in the same office.
