Hello!

Roger Thijs quoted excerpts from an German-Belgian paper about
a new international cooperation around
Limburgish-Ripuarish Platt in the Aachen area:

>Was Kaiser Karl einst sprach, soll wieder hoffähig werden.
>Mundartbeitskreis "Os Platt" gegründet.
>Vaals
>Kaiser Karl soll es gesprochen haben und die Limburger, die Ostbelgier
>und die Aachener sprechen es heute noch. Nur hoffähig ist das
>Karolingisch-Fränkische heute nicht mehr, doch das soll sich ändern,
>versichert der neu gegründete Arbeitskreis "Os Platt".

What allows us to assume that 'Charlesmagne' used this as vernacular?
Is it only the fact that Aachen/Aken was an important centre for him, or is
there more evidence?
Would anybody know more about that?
I always believed that we are not able to say anything about the parole of
Charles the Great, anything which would be more than just speculation.
Anyhow, any written evidence would be in Latin.
I thought this issue was also discussed - without result - sometimes in the
context of (stupid, if I may say so) discussions of both France and Germany
in the aim to claim Karl/Charles for their history.

I would appreciate, if somebody could enlighten me on that topic (even if it
is only in the outskirts of Lowland matters).

kind regards
Georg Deutsch

Cristoir,

Allegedly 'summut' is indeed a contraction of
'somewhat' - cf German 'etWAS'.
