I'd always thought of this as a joke rather than a "saw" but
now that you put it in this context, I see it!

There's also this half-rhymed version:

"Caain names breks nae banes."
(Calling names breaks no bones)

Of course, you can always find a proverb to contradict any other:

"Fair words hurt never a bane, but foul words brak mony a ane."

or:

"Slander leaves a sair ahint."
(Slander leaves a hurt behind it)
