Subject: Resources: 18th century Dutch

Today I got some old dictionaries for little of no money at the
"braderie" in Mechelen. A braderie is a kind of sales action, mostly
just for one single day, with all shops of the main streets
participating, selling not only in-house but also with little stands in
front of the shop's door. For the occasion private persons organise
additionally a kind of flee market all over the town. Mechelen has a
large Maghreb population downtown in the old houses.

The dictionaries I found among the flee market rubbish:

2 vols bound as one (pages not numbered); front and back hard cover
still there but stained, spine gone, some "binding cloth" hanging; pages
not damaged, complete and still well-bound.

"Flaman"  (without d) becomes "Duits" or "Nederlandsch" in Dutch on the
title pages (I wunder if "Duits" on page one is not a typesetting
error???)

In the first volume:
- "langue Flamande":    Nederduytsche tael
- "Alleman": voir Alman
- "Alman", m.: Een Duytscher, Hoogh-duytscher
- ("Bas-Alleman(d)",  "belge" ,  "nerlandais" are not listed)

In the second volume:
- "Nederlandt", siet Neerlandt
- ("Neerlandt" is not listed though)
- "Nerlanders", Bas Allemans, m
- (Ne(d)erduytsch is not listed)
- ("Diets(ch)", "Duyts(ch)", "Hoog(h)-duyts(ch)", "Vlaems(ch)"  are not
listed)

"Blga": ... Een Nederlander of Nerlander
"Belgae": ... De Nederlanders, 't volk van Nederland
"Belgicus": ... Nederlansche, van de Nederlanderen (plural of land
with -eren!!)
"Belgium": ... Pikardijen, een landschap in Vrankryk, in zyn gansche
uytstrekking genomen. Hedendags gebruykt men Belgium voor Vlaenderen, of
Nederland.
"Flandria"... Vlaanderen, een landschap van 't Oostenryks Nederland.
"Hollandia", ae. f. Holland. een van de Vereenigde Landschappen. Al de
Vereenigde Nederlanden worden ook (alhoewel by misbruyk) met dezen naam
benoemt, om dat Holland 't grootste en 't aanzienlykste Landschap is.

After I left, it started raining heavely. I guess the books may have
ended in the sewer eventually.
Do we still care for our past?

Subject: Nieuw Dialectwoordenboek

Gisteren zaterdag gevonden in de Standaard-boekhandel te Mortsel,
blijkbaar vers van de pers:

Herman J. Claeys, Vlaams Dialectenwoordenboek,  2001, Artus uitgevers &
Herman J. Claeys, ISBN 90-804539-5-1, 621 blz, BEF 968 of 24 EURO.

Het is geen woordenboek van wijdverspreide "Belgicismen" of
"Verkavelingsvlaams" maar een selectie van woorden uit de Vlaamse,
Brabantse en Limburgse dialectwoordenschat. Men kan zich de vraag
stellen over de zin van het alfabetisch door elkaar schuiven van woorden
die verspreid zitten over een sterk uitgebreid dialectgebied.

Wij zochten naar "kallen" (Limburgs voor praten, spreken):

kal I (m) praat // kallen ( ~Eng. to call = roepen; ~ Zw. kalla =
noemen; Deens kalde = roepen) - (L) 1. praten, spreken: Limburgs kallen;
2. babbelen, bazelen // kaletig (bn) - (L) op praten gesteld. //
kallemoeie (v) - 1. (W) babbelaarster, klappei; 2. (Gent) bemoeizuchtige
vrouw. // kalzamig (bn) - (Hass) spraakzaam; var. kelzamig (Genk) - Vgl.
kallefakter & kallegaaien.

kal II, kalle (v), zie cale

cale (v) ... (Fr) - 1. spie, wig, blokje; 2. erectie: m een kal staan -
Ant.

kalle (v) (<Mnl. kallen = praten) - kraai, ekster, gaai - W

kalle I. (v) - pik, lul: ze kalle afsnakken - zich afrukken - Ost.

kalle II (v) (<Jiddish = bruid) - dwaas vrouwmens - W. O.

Achteraan in het boek zit er een uitgebreide lijst van locale
dialectwoordenboeken, waaruit kennelijk gecompileerd werd. Vele titels
waren mij onbekend; sommige ervan zijn kennelijk univeristeitsthesissen
en moeilijk te vinden.

De weergave is dialect-Nederlands. er is geen index Nederlands-dialect.

Mag er zijn, leuk om in te bladeren.
