Dear List,
Regarding the article on the Lumbee language pointed out so kindly
by Ron last week: the chief investigator is Dr Walt Wolfram, who has
done
so much for the study of the Appalachian language.
It is always encouraging to read such news, and to know that such
distinguished academics as he and Dr Michael Montgomery are giving their
time to the preservation of our language and culture.
Yours,
+Fr Andreas Richard Turner.

Subject: Language varieties

Thanks for the extra information, Father Andreas! Your enthusiasm,
contributions and off-list kind words of encouragement constitute one of
the major sources of support I enjoy "running" the List. I am sorry you
feel lonely as the only "vocal" Appalachian speaker and writer in this
forum so far. But please do not stop delighting us with postings in
your dialect. I know I am not the only one here who enjoys it. Quite a
few new subscribers specify Applachian as one of the languages of
interest, and I am pretty sure our Scots-speaking friends find it very
interesting too. In fact, please feel free anytime to share any sorts
of Appalachian texts with us, as long as you do not mind us picking it
apart afterwards. :)

As for the Lumbee language, please allow me to reiterate it below for
the benefit of several new subscribers. (A special hello to the three
who joined us today, from Haarlem in the Netherlands, Melbourne in
Australia, and -- a neighborly "Hi!" from me in Seattle -- in Olympia,
Washington State in the USA!)

I happen to be very interested in things Native American (and what am I
*not* interested in?) and would welcome discussions of
Native-American-specific varieties of Lowlands languages if anyone cares
to kick them off.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron

Dear Lowlanders,

Those of you who are interested in English, especially American,
dialects and Scottish and Irish as well as Native American influences on
them ought to check out the following online article published by North
Carolina State University:

"NC State University Sociolinguist Tracing Roots of Lumbee Language"
http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/univ_relations/news_services/press_releases/98_11/374.htm

---start quote---
"We were surprised to find examples of dialectal affinity to the Outer
Banks," says Wolfram, "but they are isolated examples." He suggests that
more likely, both speech communities shared a common Scots-Irish English
dialect influence, which also is apparent in Appalachian speech.
