Folk,

Most Brits my age (24) would now say 'skedjule' as
well, of course.

As for Australian, that still strikes me as clearly
more British than American. There would be a number of
reasons for this. American influence is there, of
course, but not really much more so that it is in the
UK. Australia and the UK still have a cultural unity
(in terms of the sports they play, to an extent the
food they eat, big exchange of TV programmes [spelled
the same!], and a lot of movement between the two)
that would still have linguistic consequences. There
are 'blokes' in Australia who always drive 'cars'
which must stop at 'give way signs'.

When I was in Australia I had no difficulty whatsoever
understanding the locals and they had no difficulty
understanding me. In the United States I did have
problems on occasions, however. That's the best
evidence - all the analysis in the world doesn't beat
intuition and experience in real life!
