Subject: Oaks

A week ago I posted a question. Nobody answered (except for someone with
an fascinating lot of fantasy, but not a
philologist), maybe because my question was in Dutch? So I give it
another (shorter) try in English.

Does anyone know more about the relation between the words tree (oak)
and truth.

Truth, truce, trust, tryst, and also trow, troth, and trough come from
true, so I read: ‘True, O.E. triewe (W.Saxon),
treowe (Mercian), from P.Gmc. *trewwjaz, perhaps ultimately from I.E.
*dru- ‘tree,’ on the notion of ‘steadfast as an
oak.’

More connections: drus is ‘oak’ in Greek, derw in Welsh, dair in Irish,
and drum is a tree in Indra’s or Krishna’s
paradise.

I am interested in the mythological connections (oak is a holy tree
everywhere) and how (this) tree gave us the word for
the ultimate Truth.

I also would like to know more about the word druid (‘from Gaulish
druides, from O.Celt. *derwijes, representing
O.Celt. derwos ‘true’ and *dru- ‘tree’, especially oak’).

What does the name Diarmaid mean?

About the word ‘oak’ itself: where does it come from?

Is there a connection with hog or hag? Why (not)?

Thank you so much for your attention,

Selma Schepel, Amsterdam
