John Donne said "no man is an island". Unfortunately, languages often
appear to be; left unused and "uninhabitied", as it were, they sink away
forever lost. Fortunately, the University of Washington has made
preserved Makah linguistic materials available (and I thank them
heartily for that), but the real thread is severed when there is no one
imbued with ALL aspects of the culture; a living language ISN'T an
island. A revived language, shorn of its related cultural components
IS.

Sad to hear of Ruth's death -- and sadder for yet another cuclture
suffering another loss.
