Migrant farm workers were common across Britain: in parts, they formed a
significant part of the workforce.  In Norfolk in the 1800s, people were
in 'gangs' which were hired as a whole, rather than individually.  The
conditions these people worked in was dreadful: they worked for their
food, and a home was a farm building on whatever farm they were working
on.

"Luc Hellinckx" <luc.hellinckx at pandora.be> Wrote about "kossaatn" and
"koetter" (B).  The latter term has a Middle English cognate, 'cottar'
or 'cotter', which is often found in a pairing with 'bordar' in modern
historians (as a translation of the Latin 'bordarius').

I have long had in the back of my mind the idea for an exhibition called
'Forced to Work: the European Experience of Slavery'.  This would look
at our common heritage as slaves (as opposed to our heritage as slavers,
which is the focus of a number of exhibitions already). I would bring
together the histories of such agricultural gangs, cottars and bordars,
convicts and mental health patients forced to do manual labour,
Operation Todd - and also the histories of resistance, including song,
canting language, and the Co-operative movement. Perhaps this could be
an online exhibition, formed of links to sites which explore each topic.
Anyway, it will have to wait a few years until I've finished my research
degree!

Hi, Pat!

This sounds like a worthwhile exhibition to plan.  I'm sure quite a few
Lowlanders would be willing to help, myself included.  Of course, this
would be a huge undertaking, going from antiquity (Latin _sclavus_,
Greek _sklabos_ 'captive', 'slave', 'Slav') to the present time (e.g.,
illegal immigrants' bondage in sweatshops and brothels).
