Hi Fiete,

this book was written in the 19th century, originally in French, by the
Belgian author Charles de Coster. A bound edition can be ordered for
22,90
Euros at www.buechergilde.de; it is not currentla available at
amazon.de,
but they indicate that a paperback version exists which would cost
around 5
Euros. Since it counts as a classic, chances are your local library
might
either have it or be able to obtain it for you.

Best regards,
Gabriele Kahn

Dear Fiete,

The book you are asking about is well-known to me. First I read it when
I
was a schoolboy in early 80's. That was "La legende de Till Ulenspiegel"
by
Charles de Coster in Russian translation which made a strong impression
on
me. Later I got the French original. I suppose this is not the only book
telling about those two guys and their adventures in medieval Flandern.
Till
Ulenspiegel himself is a famous folklore character, a kind of European
Hodja
Nasr-ed-Din. De Coster wrote his brilliant novel in XIX century, but I
know
there is a Low German version of the story dating back to XVI century.
The
book is full of humor despite the fact that the historical background is
rather grim. Later I even saw a movie based on that story. Did Till
Ulenspiegel really exist? Who knows? I think that if he did not he
should be
invented because such a man must exist at least in our hearts.

Best regards,
Mike Aryunov
