The English for the roof opening is _louver_, from Old French lover,
lovier, which Chambers cites as 'origin obscure'. Would this be related?
I know nothing about Romance philology.

The Norn word was *lyora (preserved only in old rhymes), lyorin, from
ON ljo/ri, with the same meaning. But in some areas, [lju:s], ON _ljo/s,
was apparently used.
