My Grandfather would use the singular eg. "That cost five pound" we still find
ourselves comfortable with saying either "ten foot" or "ten
feet" as the same distance of measurement. The meat arguement is complicated
by the Norman land theft and the strange effect it had on
our language creating acceptable forms for domestic use so that pig became
pork when the foreign aristocracy got their teeth into it.
