Ron, are you sure that wasn't  "chi'ren", with an infinitesimal
pause (slight glottal stop?) at the inverted comma?   That's how it
was pronounced where I lived, at least.

I think I heard it as "chilren" ['tS`Ilr at n] in slow mode and as "chirren"
['tS`Ir(:)@n] in faster modes.  This is also how my mother-in-law (from the
Birmingham area in Alabama) used to pronounce it in laid-back mode.

I did not detect any syllable-final glottal stops in that dialect, just
occasional shortening of the following type, depending on speed: _box_ [bOks]
> _bok'_ [bOk] (perhaps with an unreleased [k] as in Southeast Asian languages) > _bo'_ [bO], _ask_ = _aks_ [?Eaks] > _ak'_ [?Eak].
