Dear Lowlanders!

Who can tell me about origination of the adjectivel suffix -sk-, which
can be
found in all the Slavic and Germanic languages (also in forms -sh- and
-sch-)?

Roman,

I think you opened up a very interesting topic (above).

Please also consider that you get cognates of this morpheme in Romance
languages, basically */-sk-/, as in Italian _tedesco_ 'German'. I have
a strong feeling that this was originally an approximant morpheme,
describing manner or likeness, thus _tedesco_ "in the German (tiud >
ted-) manner" (Old German _tiudisc_ > Modern German _deutsch_). Romance
languages still use it more directly in this sense, e.g., French
_romanesque_ "Roman-like", "in the Roman manner/style", borrowed by
English, e.g., "opalesque" 'opal-like'.

Thus, this Indo-European morpheme is semantically and functionally
virtually equal to its Altaic counterparts, e.g., Turkic _-cha_ ~ _-chä_
which on top of describing manner/style > language can also derive
nouns, e.g., (Arab. >) Uyghur _kitab_ 'book' > _kitabchä_ 'booklet',
'book-like publication'.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
