Subject: Omission of -w-

Beste leeglanners,

Browsing some toponymic data, I noticed the similar way that Dutch,
English or Belgian place-names containing the word "wijk" (D), "wich"
(E) or "werd" (D) as the final part of a composite noun are being
pronounced :

greenwich > grinitsj
norwich > norritsj
opwijk > opaëk, oppek
kootwijk > kodek
jukwerd > jukkerd

The "w" is omitted.
This rule also applies for normal nouns in my version of Brabantish
where
for example,

"somwijlen" (D), "somewhile" (E)

becomes

"soemaëln"

However, in some regions (? Frisian, ? Limburgish) this rule doesn't
apply, judging :

noordwijk > noordwiek
haulerwijk > haulerwyk
blitterswijk > blitterswik

The Shetland-isles could be very interesting, because they contain quite
a
few "...wick"-place-names.

Greetings,

Luc Hellinckx
