Further on "New Russia" ... I looked it up in Reuben Epp's book (_The
Story of Low German & Plautdietsch: tracing a language across the
globe_, Hillsboro, Kansas: The Reader's Press, 1993):

p. 97, footnote 1:

Although the area known as the Ukraine in which the first major
Mennonite colonies were established, is often referred to by them as
South Russia, at the time of those settlements they were located on
lands newly conquered by Russia, and were then known as New Russia. See

Dear Lowlanders,

Although Ron has rather adequately ansered the question regarding use
of the term 'New Russia,' I would further confirm with the following
quote from page 51 of "None but Saints" (1988), by James Urry,
Professor of Anthropology at Victoria University in Wellington,
New Zealand:

Russia's borders were greatly expanded during Catherine's reign,
particularly southward towards the Black Sea and the Crimea. The
province of New Russia (Novorossia) was enlarged and lands
controlled by semi-independent Cossack groups were brought fully
under central control and wars with Turkey led to the annexation of
land subject to the Crimean Khanate."
