Well its good to see Ron took my kidding the way it was intended. The
kidding was directed at myself.
I do have some knowledge of Low Saxon picked up from this list, a few of
those 'jokey' books that are often mentioned and the occasional encounter
with Low Saxon speakers - who are usually completely at a loss as to 1. How
this Scotsman knows enough to make a fairly good attempt at speaking it. 2.
Why on earth is he interested.

The making a midden was based on the assumption that Ron knows I'm fluent in
German and have a knowledge of the sound shifts that can be used to
'predict' what the Low Saxon cognates of German will likely be. Of course
the danger here is producing what is known as Patent Platt - equivalent to
the 'respelled and relexified' standard English that is often passed as
Scots.

The great difficulty with writing Low Saxon as a non-native speaker is the
want of a 'standard' orthography. Like Scots, Low Saxon is spoken in a
multitude of dialects. And as far as I can gather much more variable than
Scots dialects. There are often discussions on the list about devolping a
'standard' orthography for Low Saxon and I follow them avidly. The
approaches and methodology used have a lot to offer when it comes to
debating the same for Scots.

My orthographic choices must have been a 'midden' ;-)
