Subject: Afrikaans - die Vierkleur vlag

Haai Lowlanders,

Ek het my eerste Afrikaans geleer
My

I have just read the rather limited correspondence in Afrikaans in the
archive and would like to make a short contibution. I was taught my first
Afrikaans at school in Bulawayo in the former Rhodesia and learned the
remainder in South Africa. I am not a linguist but enjoy the languages I
know. My hobby concerns flags and the history of flags and combined with the
history of flags follows the history of its people who proudly bore the
flag. And in order to enjoy a language you have to have knowledge of the
history of its people and realise what made them into a nation.

Hierdie, my eerste bydrae bestaan uit 'n kort gedig geskrywe deur Dominee
November 1874 in die Transvaal Advocate and Commercial Advertiser.

This, my first contribution consists of a short poem written by the Rev.
Marthinus van der Hoff about the "Vierkleur" flag of the South African
Republic (Transvaal) which he co-designed, as it appeared in the Transvaal
Advocate and Commercial Advertiser of 23 November 1874.

The poem is written in Dutch, which, at he time was the written language
used by the Afrikaaners.

Vivat de vlag, vivat de vlag,
           door vrijheid hier geplant,
           Waai rond door Zuid'lijk Afrika
           van oost- tot westerstrand!
           Blijf onbezoedeld, rein en schoon,
           en wapper ook op zee!
Vertoon u aan den volk'ren oog
           tot aan de verste ree!
God zij met u, God zij met u,
           gij maagdelijke vlag,
En met het volk dat u verkoos,
           tot aan den jongste dag!

Below follows the English version:

Long live the flag, long live the flag,
            through freedom planted here,
            Wave around through Southern Africa
            from east- to western shore!
            Remain unsullied, pure and clean,
            and also fly at sea!
            Display yourself to nation's eye
            to the furthest corners!
God be with you, God be with you,
            you virginal flag,
And with your people, those who chose you,
            until the judgement day!

Groete/Regards
Andre R. van de Loo
