Subject: etymology

Dear Lowlanders,

I submit the following question on behalf of Nicoline van der Sijs.

Does anyone know the origin of the Sinhalese word "padda-boat"?

The Dutch ruled over most of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) from 1656 until 1796. In
this
period they introduced a number of things unknown to the Sinhalese until
then.
As a result the Sinhalese borrowed quite a lot of Dutch words. One of
the
things introduced by the Dutch (and still in use today) was the
so-called
padda-boat, a type of barge with a thatched roof which was towed or
poled or
sailed through canals dug by the Dutch. It seems likely that
"padda(-boat)" is
a Dutch loan word, but I cannot find the Dutch source. Or is "padda" a
Sinhalese word? What is its etymology? Any help will be appreciated. The
word
is not discussed in Geiger's "Etymological glossary of the Sinhalese
language".
