Subject: Resources

Dear Lowlanders,

Of all the web presentations about the Hanseatic League/Guild (a medieval
trading alliance first among individual merchant houses and then among
coastal cities, with far-reaching, international representation and
partnerships), so far the best one in my opinion is the following:

     http://www.susas.de/hanse.htm

The information is provided in German. I think that, apart from this
linguistic limitation, it is a particularly useful resource for those who
need both the nutshell version and a fair amount of detail. Its focus is
the Hansa League of what is now the area comprising Northern Germany, the
Eastern Netherlands and Northern Poland (i.e., the Saxon language area with
then powerful linguistic influences, especially around the Baltic Sea), but
it mentions also the Flemish Hansa, both leagues having had representation
in places such as London, as well as links with each other (and they may
well be in large part responsible for both Lowlands Saxon and
Dutch/Flemish/Zeelandic contacts with English).

Among English language sites--none of which can be compared to the
above-mentioned--the following might be mentioned:

http://members.bellatlantic.net/~baronfum/hansa.html
http://www.unibw-hamburg.de/PWEB/hisfrn/hanse.html

A fair English language presentation about Hanseatic history of Norway:

Reinhard/Ron
