This is fascinating Tom as the Tom responding to you grew up in Edinburgh
Scotland and we always made what we called "neep lanterns" at Halloween just
as you described before going round the houses Guisin'. Pumpkins were never
used as they are native to America and their carving probably evolved there
from our turnip lanterns.
