Ik ken mensen die nu in Oostende wonen, maar oorspronkelijk uit
Zuid-west-vlaanderen komen en als verkleinvorm "tsen" gebruiken.

autootsen         (autootje)
schilderie-tsen (schilderijtje)

In de omgeving van Mechelen - Antwerpen wordt "ij" als "aa" uitgesproken.

schilderij = schilderaa.

Misschien is schilderaatsen een mengvorm van - tsen als verkleinwoord en
"aa" in plaats van "ij"?

Het is maar een gok.

Bedankt, Danny!  Dit verklaart, waarom het vermeende "meervoud"
_schilderaats_ niet of zelden word gebruikt.

Thanks, Danny!  This explains why the supposed "plural" form _schilderaats_
is not or rarely used.

The only word I can think of with the same ending -ats as in 'Schilderaats'
is the word "Dreckats", famously used in Thomas Mann's 'Buddenbrooks'.  I
think that was Bavarian.  I've no idea if the endings are morphologically
the
same.
