My Sanskrit professor (who was Scottish), had a theory on this.  He
maintained that one had to be very careful to visitors and especially make
sure they didn't die in your village, since you would then be responsible
for their ghost forever.

Not at all extinct.  Perhaps a bit on the rare side in common speech, I
believe it is fairly universally understood by most native speakers of
English, at least in North America.
